Taking nasal swabs at home from humans, cats and dogs is feasible according to the results of the BEready pilot study, demonstrating that decentralised monitoring of respiratory diseases is possible. In a sample of 15,000 people in the canton of Bern, we found that half of the respondents were willing to take part in a cohort study for pandemic preparedness research. We also investigated whether affective polarisation (i.e. affinity towards people with similar attitudes to oneself and hostility towards people with opposing views) in relation to the COVID-19 vaccination is linked to willingness to participate.
